Most people are familiar with Bluetooth technology but some people confuse it with Blu-Ray technology. For the sake of keeping things clear, let met take a second and describe what this technology actually is. This is really just a way to exchanging data wirelessly over a short distance. Most of the time this is a few meters but some devices can transmit and receive at distances of up to 100 meters.

Today I’m going to teach you how to get Bluetooth on your computer for free. Keep in mind that it’s not possible to “magically” create a Bluetooth radio if your computer isn’t equipped with one.

Many modern computers are equipped with an internal Bluetooth radio transmitter but some aren’t. If you don’t have one that has built in Bluetooth, you’ll need to buy what is called a “Bluetooth adapter”.

There are all kinds of Bluetooth adapters that you can buy for your computer and the good news is that there isn’t any reason to go break open the piggy bank to be able to afford them. You can buy a really good unit for less than $20. I should point out that some people call them “micro Bluetooth adapters”, or “micro adapters”, or “Bluetooth dongles”, or even “micro Bluetooth Dongles.

Many people own computers that don’t have the software for using a Bluetooth device installed on their computer because their computer wasn’t shipped with a built in radio. As this technology is becoming more and more popular, these people end up purchasing a Bluetooth adapter and they find themselves looking for the software to make the device work.

Now, lets get to the nitty gritty of how to get Bluetooth on your computer for free. I’ve confirmed that this method works on Windows 7 and I believe that it works on Windows Vista.

  1. Click Start –> Computer –> Hard Drive C –> Windows –> System32.
  2. Then type “fsquirt” in the search box and click on the search icon.
  3. Then look for the file called fsquirt.exe. Right click on it and click Send To –> Desktop.
  4. Now you have a shortcut to the Bluetooth program on your desktop that will allow you to send or receive files using Bluetooth technology and it didn’t cost you anything at all.

Now, all you have to do is plug your adapter into an open USB port on your computer, run the software, and you can do all kinds of things like transfer files from your cell phone, PDA, other mobile devices, and even other computers.

Everyone has their favorite way of using this technology. Mine is transferring music and video files from my desktop to my laptop. I have a huge selection of music and videos on my desktop. It’s not practical to keep all of these files on my laptop because the hard drive on my laptop just isn’t big enough. Using this technology, it’s a breeze to send music or movies to my laptop.
