A couple of days ago a friend of mine called me up and in a very panicked voice he said, “My computer screen is black when I turn it on! What should I do?” I spent a few minutes asking him to explain exactly what was going on and he said, “My computer turns on the but the screen stays black”. While researching what might cause this, I realized that many people have experienced the same problem and there is a lot of of confusion about what might cause actually this. This confusion inspired me to write this article.

Today I’d like to share with you some things to try if this happens to you. The first thing you want to do is pay close attention to what you are actually seeing so you’ll know what to do to fix the problem. Before you panic, you should check that the power cord for the monitor is actually plugged in to the power strip or wall outlet. If it’s plugged in and you press the power button on the monitor but the power indicator light doesn’t light up, you have one of two problems. Either the outlet on the power strip is bad or the monitor is bad. To find out which problem you have, plug the monitor into another outlet that you are sure is working. If the light on the monitor still doesn’t come on and you’re sure the cord is fully seated at both the outlet and the monitor, your monitor most likely needs to be replaced.

If the light on the monitor comes on but you still have a black screen when your turn the computer on, you should check to ensure the the monitor signal cord is securely seated in the outlet on the back of your computer. Many of these plugs have screws on either side so they don’t wiggle loose. Most people don’t actually take the time to tighten these screws when they first connect a monitor to the computer. Over time, as the computer gets moved around, these connections often work their way loose causing a black screen.

If the connection is secure but you still don’t have a picture, it’s time to investigate things a bit further. If you turn the computer on and you see words on the screen for a moment and then the screen goes black, there are a few things that could be causing this. The video card on your computer could be bad or going bad or there could a problem with the operating system installation on the computer.

The way to find out what is actually going on is to connect another monitor to the computer. If everything looks fine when your replace the monitor, you’ll know that your monitor is bad and needs to be replaced. If you connect another monitor to the computer and the screen is still black, the problem is either your video card, a software error, or a bad hard drive. Unfortunately there aren’t any real easy ways to know which problem you actually have.

If you take your computer to a computer shop, they can perform a few tests. They can install another video card in the computer and test to see if the picture shows up. If they put a new video card in but they still don’t have a picture, this means the video card is probably fine. They can then install a different hard drive in the computer that has already has and operating system installed on it. If installing the new hard drive solves the problem, the hard drive most likely needs to be replaced.
