If you’ve spent any amount of time reading up on touch screen laptop computers, chances are that you’ve heard some buzz about the hybrid digitizer touch screen LCD monitor on touch screen computers.  A hybrid digitizer is a touch screen that is designed to take advantage of both the passive and active digitizer touch screen functionality.

A passive digitizer touch screen is one that recognizes touch input from a persons finger or other non-electric stylus. These digitizers often require a little pressure to recognize the touch.  One advantage of passive digitizers is that they support multi-touch gestures.  A disadvantage of passive digitizers is that when the computer is being used in tablet mode and the user is writing on the screen with the stylus, the user will often times bump the screen with his or her palm.  This bump is usually interpreted as a second touch and the computer gets confused as to what to do with this second input data.  This often causes errors in the accuracy of handwriting recognition software.

An active digitizer touch screen requires the use of an electronic stylus to interact with the touch screen.  The advantages of active digitizer touch screens is that the user can take full advantage of the handwriting recognition software without the computer getting confused by the user resting his or her palm on the touch screen while writing.  Active digitizers are also more accurate since the point of the stylus has a finer tip than the human finger.  The disadvantages of active digitizer touch screens is that they don’t support multi touch technology and you must always use an electronic stylus with them.

Up until recently, consumers had to choose one or the other type of touch screen.  This compromise meant that some of the features that make touch screen laptops useful would have to be given up.  The solution to the problem lies in what is called a hybrid digitizer touch screen.  With the flick of a switch, the user can change the touch screen from a passive digitizer to an active digitizer and vise versa.

I believe that the future of touch screen laptop computers lies in hybrid digitizer technology. The added flexibility afforded to users by hybrid digitizers will result in computers that have many more capabilities.
