Many people who are in the market to buy a new touch screen laptop find themselves wondering about how to choose between glossy vs matte screen finishes.  While this tends to be a matter of personal preference there are some things to keep in mind when deciding which type to buy.

The best way to find out which type of touchscreen you should buy is to go into a computer store that has laptops with both glossy and matte finish touch screens. This will give you a chance to find out exactly what you want and then you can purchase your laptop online and get a much better price. Plan on spending a few minutes in the store just playing with them.  Touch the screens with your fingers and with that stylus that is included. Make a note of how well each type recognizes your touch input.  Does one seem to be more responsive than the other?  In most cases, the finish of the screen probably won’t have much of an impact on how responsive the touchscreen is.

After you have decided which one seems to work the best, take a good hard look at the screen and see which one shows the most fingerprints on it.  Does seeing fingerprints on the screen drive you bonkers?  If so, you probably should avoid buying a touch screen laptop that easily collects fingerprints. Odds are that the shiny screen will be covered with fingerprints and the matte finish screen will hardly show any at all.  This is one of the downfalls of glossy touch screens.  They tend to show a lot of fingerprints on them.

Another thing that people often find disheartening about touchscreen laptops with glossy screens are reflections on the screen.  If you’re viewing the computer screen at an angle, you can often see reflections from around the room on the screen.  There is also the possibility of having a lot of glare on shiny screens from the lighting in the room you are sitting in.

Certain types of touch screens work better if they have a glossy finish.  The most popular touchscreen devices of recent times is the Apple iPad and despite the fact that glossy screens tend to show more fingerprints, it has been wildly successful.

As I mentioned above, the decision of what type of touchscreen finish to get on your touch screen computer is really one that comes down to personal preference and only you can decide that but arming yourself with a little bit of knowledge will prepare you to make the best possible decision.

11-29-2011 Update: I thought I should pop in and update this post because things have changed a bit since I first wrote it over a year ago. When it comes to choosing between a glossy and a matte finish on touch screen devices, your choices are becoming limited. The reason for this is that most devices that I’ve seen lately seem to have glossy screens on them. This means it’s time that we all just learn to cope with the fingerprint on the screen issue. I’ve actually gotten to the point that seeing fingerprints doesn’t bother me as much as it once did. I guess you could say that it just takes a while to retrain our brains after having spent so many years trying to remember to not touch the screens so we didn’t get fingerprints on them.
