An Answer To The Question: How Do I Block Websites On My Computer?
Yesterday someone from my church called me up and asked me the question: How do I block a website on my computer? They were concerned that their young children might stumble upon websites that they don’t approve of while using the Internet. This made me think that a lot of people probably have this same question which makes it a perfect candidate for an article in my “Solutions to Computer Problems” series of articles.
How To Block A Website On Your Computer
You have a few options when it comes to blocking websites on your computer. You can block specific types of websites, you can block websites that contain certain words in them, or you can block the Internet Protocol (IP) address or URL of a particular website,
Let’s say that you want to block adult oriented websites from your computer. This is usually what most parents are interested in doing because they probably don’t want to spend months combing through the Internet to find the exact URL of every website that they think should be blocked. There are a couple of ways to do this.
The first is just to enable safe searching in the search engine that you use. Whether you use Google, Bing, Yahoo, or whatever, there will be a setting called something like “Safe Search Filtering”. Let’s use Google as an example. In Google, you click on the icon that looks like a gear in the upper right hand corner of any of Google’s search results pages to access this setting. Then you can choose from three levels of filtering.
This is one level of protection and I recommend that you use it on your computer. This, however, will only block websites from displaying in the search results for that particular search engine. This will probably protect young children from being exposed to inappropriate material but savvy teens can easily get past this by using another browser.
Using Internet Filtering Software To Block Certain Websites On Your Computer
To circumvent teens from bypassing the method above, you might want to try blocking websites with parental control software. There’s some free parental control software called K9 Web Protection that will block websites that fall into one or more of the seventy plus filters that the software has. For free software, it comes with some powerful features like “enhances anti-tampering”, “time restrictions”, and “reports of accessed websites”. You can download this software here: Download K9 Web Protection.
If you have young children who will be accessing the Internet, you might want to consider installing a special web browser that is tailored just for kids. KidZui is free software to block websites and it has website block features as well as features to automatically deliver age appropriate web content to your children. You can download this software here: Download KidZui.
How to Block Certain Websites on Your Computer
Now, let’s say that you need to know how to block Internet sites that you know the URL for. In this case you could put some form of an IP blocker in place. Like all homes have unique phone numbers and addresses, all websites have an IP Address. The only problem is that many websites share IP addresses. For example the IP address for my website is 188.8.131.52. My site is an example of a website that is on a shared IP. If you were to block my IP, you would be blocking accesses to a bunch of other websites but you wouldn’t have any idea of whether you were blocking access to websites that you’ll need to visit in the future. For this reason, IP blocking has its downsides.
A better solution would be to block the particular URL of the website. A URL is the alphanumeric address that you type into a web browser to access it. In windows you just click on the start button then type C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the search box. This should only return one result that is simply named “hosts”. Click on this file to open it and a popup window will ask you what program you want to use to open the file with. Just choose “notepad” and when it opens, it will look something like the image below.
To block specific websites on your computer you just go to the end of the file and enter 127.0.0.1 then press the “tab” key and enter the URL of the site that you want to block. Note that you don’t include “http://” when you’re doing this. Be sure and enter two lines; one with “www.” and one without. Then save the file and restart your computer.
In this example I blocked Facebook.com. If you were to do the same, no one would be able to access Facebook from your computer.
