Let’s face it. Not everyone’s home is ideally set up to have multiple computers sharing the same Internet connection. If you have a laptop, there’s no problem because you can connect to your wireless router from anywhere in your house but what if you want to turn that old attic into a bedroom for your teenage son or daughter?

You can, of course, pay someone to run network cables through your walls and into the attic so they will have an Internet connection up there but there is a much easier way to do this and it won’t cost you much money either.

An Answer To The Question: How To Make My Desktop Wireless?

First, you need to make sure that your home is set up for wireless. This will mean that you’ll need a device called a wireless router. You plug your Internet modem into this device and then any computers that are within range of the router can share the Internet Connection.

Next you’ll need to choose between one of two options. The first is to buy a little device called a “Wireless USB Adapter”. This is a nifty device that you simply plug into a USB port on your computer that will enable it to receive a signal from your wireless router. These devices can vary in both shape and size. Some come with flexible external antennas while others do not. You should expect to pay between $30 and $60 dollars for one of these devices and they can be purchased at virtually any computer store.

The other option is to install what is called a “Wireless PCI card” into your computer. These devices are actually installed into an empty expansion slot in your computer’s case. They tend to be a bit more powerful and robust when compared to a wireless USB adapter but they do require more skill to install. You’ll have to remove the access panel on the desktop tower, insert the PCI card into an available expansion slot, make the necessary connections, install the device drivers for the card, and reattach the access panel.

This second option will have a little antenna sticking out the back of your computer and these antennas are often adjustable so that you can move them around and get the best signal. The prices on these devices vary quite a bit but you shouldn’t have to pay more than you would for a USB adapter.

Which Desktop WiFi Option Should You Choose

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages and they will both transform your computer into a wireless Internet desktop. The first option is obviously much simpler. You just plug the USB adapter into an available USB port, install the device drivers, and you’re good to go. Another advantage of this option is that you can use it on multiple computers. You can use if for making a desktop wireless in your den one day and if you want, you can use it to do the same thing with a computer in your basement the next day.

Here’s a video that demonstrates the process of installing a wireless USB adapter in a computer. In the video, they use a laptop but the process is the same for a desktop.

The advantage that installing a PCI card has when it comes to making a PC wireless is that the device is securely attached to your computer instead of dangling precariously from a USB port. I’ve heard some people say they get better data transfer speeds with a PCI card as well but I’m sure this would have a lot to do with the quality of either device.

Here’s a short video that demonstrates the process of installing a PCI wireless card into a desktop computer.

The obvious disadvantage of going the PCI card route is that it requires more skill to physically install the device in a computer’s case. I wouldn’t let that discourage you though. As long as the card is designed to be compatible with your particular computer AND you have an open expansion slot, the actual job of installing one of these cards isn’t difficult. The card will come with instructions to walk you through the process and it’s not something that you have to go to a six month computer repair course to learn to do.

Now that you know how to make your computer wireless, why not take a minute and learn to do some other handy things on your computer. I suggest that you take a minute and read my article called How You Can Defragment Your Computer and Keep It Running Fast. It could really help you out a lot!
